The Cortland LGBTQ Center
The Mission of The Cortland LGBTQ Resource Center is to create a visible and empowered community through education, advocacy, resource enhancement, and linkages to essential services for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer-identified people, as well as their families and other supportive community members. Family Counseling Services is committed to serving all clients regardless of race, color, sex, national origin, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or ability to pay.
The Cortland LGBTQ Center was honored to host the Seven Valleys New Tech Academy for February’s First Friday event. The students from Seven Valley’s New Tech Academy global arts class created a display focusing on tolerance and diversity.
They describe the display:
“In class we were asked to study world
religions and cultural belief systems. We also engaged in dialogue and activities in order to develop our understanding of tolerance in a modern world. After learning about o...thers’ beliefs and practices we developed our own belief statements and black and white self portraits representing what tolerance means to us. We call this project ‘I Believe.’”
Students were responsible for every aspect of the project including taking photographs, writing their “I believe” statements, planning the event, hanging the art, and helping at the event. The students, along with their facilitators, parents, and community members, celebrated the hard work put into this project at the opening on February 3rd. The art will remain on display at 73 Main Street for the month of February. Community members are welcome to visit the display.
